The Motto That Built a Nation
“One Zambia, One Nation” is more than a political slogan — it is a covenant between the people. First proclaimed by founding President Kenneth David Kaunda at independence on 24 October 1964, the motto was a deliberate call to unity in a land of over 73 tribes and languages.
At a time when newly independent African nations were fracturing along ethnic lines, Kaunda insisted that Zambian identity would transcend tribe, region, religion, and language. The motto declared that citizenship — not ancestry — would define belonging in the new republic.
“When people understand a cause, become prepared to suffer for that cause and see glory and honour in such suffering, it is indeed just impossible to suppress them or the cause they stand for.”
Tiyende Pamodzi
Tiyende Pamodzi — “Let us walk together” in Chewa — is a beloved Zambian national song. It is a song of collective movement: not one person dragging another, but a people choosing to walk the same road.
This platform is an expression of that same choice. We believe that stories of unity, shared heritage, and common purpose strengthen the national fabric — one article, one voice, one community at a time.
What We Do
We publish stories, histories, and perspectives that illuminate what it means to be Zambian. We spotlight the provinces, the peoples, the traditions, and the innovations that make this nation extraordinary. We give voice to citizens who are walking together toward a better Zambia.
We are independent, non-partisan, and committed to factual, respectful discourse. We welcome contributions from Zambians at home and in the diaspora.
